”比較級 than” の成り立ち
まずは以下の例文を確認していきましょう。
I am taller than he (is tall).
私は彼よりも背が高い
Point① : thanは接続詞か前置詞の役割
1) I am taller than he is. (接続詞)
2) I am taller than him. (前置詞)
私は彼よりも背が高い
1)の例文の”than”を接続詞と考えて”He is”という文を置くことができます。
2)の例文の”than”は前置詞と考えることもできて、その場合は目的語(名詞)を後ろに置きます。
※ ”than”は接続詞の役割の場合、
“I am tall”と”You are tall”という2つの文を繋いでいることがわかりますね。
Point② :「比較級」の場所には、形容詞・副詞のみ。
1) I am taller than he is. (形容詞)
私は彼よりも背が高い
形容詞”tall”を使った”比較級 than”の形です。
2)The teacher speaks more slowly than his father ( speaks ). (副詞)
先生は、父(が話すの)よりゆっくり話す
副詞を使った”比較級 than”の形です。
このように、比較級の部分には、「形容詞か副詞」しか使えません。
比較級の形の判断
比較級の変化には”er”型と”more”型があります。
基本的な区別は、音節で決まります↓
○音節が1つの単語 = ”er”を後ろにつける
→ tall、cold、fast、big
○音節が2つの単語 = “er”をつける場合と“more”をつける場合がある
→clever、clear
○音節が3つの単語 = “more”を前につける
→ interesting、important、beautiful、popular、difficult
ただ、単語ごとに音節数を理解するのはとても難しいので
「短い形容詞、副詞」＝”-er”をつける
「長い形容詞、副詞」＝”more”をつける
と理解しても大丈夫です。
① 基本の形: 比較級(-er) than
I am taller than he (is tall).
私は彼よりも背が高い
(A) I am tall ＋ (B) You are tall
↓”比較級 than”でつなぐ。比較級＝形容詞”tall”
(A) I am taller than (B) You are tall
↓ 同じ語句”is tall”は省略しても良い
(A) I am taller than (B) You are tall.
↓ 完成形は
I am taller than You (are).
② 数や量を比べる形
I have more books than you (have/do).
私はあなたよりも多くの本を持っている。
(A) I have many books. ＋ (B)You have many books.
↓“A more / fewer / less 名詞 than B”でつなぐ。比較級＝形容詞”many”
(A) I have more books than (B) You havemany books.
↓ 同じ語句”is tall”は省略しても良い
(A) I have more books than (B) You havemany books.
↓ 完成形は
I have more books than you (have / do).
③ 比較級less を使う表現
He is less smart than she (is).
彼は彼女ほど賢くはない
この表現は、”not as 原級 as”と意味は同じです。
